A Snackbar on Texel ...

Lucky me had another day on this beautiful island ... Enough time to cycle along the coast and visit Den Burg. There I passed a Snack Bar. On the sunblind I discovered the sentence: "Summer is a state of mind". And as I liked it much, I share it now with you. Anyone else discovered this one?

Much summer in your mind! Steffi Kirschbaum

PS to my positive pictures expectations ...

PS.:
For those of you wonderful solutionists who, after the Texellent conference of this year feel a bit nostalgic for former conferences, photosouvenirs of those are still accessible online.
Just replace the year's count in the link for the appropriate year (2003 - 2009).
The "SOLogne" in 2008 for example is accessible via this URL:

Enjoy!

My positive pictures expectation ...

Dear Solutionists,

a photograph of the SOL steering group, as convened during the Texel conference (and photographed by David Weber), plus a view of the plenary in the De Hof church are now available on this ning side.

More (quite some ...) of my photosouvenirs (including three nice ones I received from Loraine Kennedy) are accessible via this link:

can you please create with me the youtubevideo which inspires us to take more selfinitiative?

i was inspired by the idea of how to create an organisation, where structure supports and not disturbs selfresponsibility

Workshop: Guerilla Goodness. Hit and run to change the world

Presenter: Lisa Boelaert & Herwig Deconinck

Place and time: Proeflokaal, friday 15 may 2009 at 11:45

maybe it's a good way of creating change in complex systems to do a specific act of "goodness" and hope for uncountable but useful impact. And if so: hit and trust (as Jenny inspired the change of wording from hit and run: not less intens and dynamic, i would say!)

compearble to me with the SF… Continue

R&D goes SF...

It sounds like a title of a new videoclip. But in real life it is a challenging new task that I took on board.

Since Hoogendoorn is the world leader on innovation in the Greenhouse IT business we have a serious (in numbers and mentality...) R&D team. Yearly we spend some 15% of our turnover on R&D, comparable with some of the major pharmaceutical companies. The R&D manager deliberately reports direct to me and not to the commercial manager since it is my opinion that… Continue

Latest news on the strange story of Phage

You may remember the section in The Solutions Focus book about the strange story of phage - the virus that eats bacteria. An evolving alternative to antibiotics, phage evolve along with bacteria and so offer a possible way to deal with bacteria which develop resistance to antibiotics. The parallel is with 'every case is different' (phage) vs 'every case is the same' (antibiotics).

I thought you might be interested to know that the development of phage treatments is continuing, with… Continue

Hans-Peter Korn has sent you a message on SOLWorld.

Hi Jon

Thank you for joining this group! It is great that now we have a person from the positive deviance community in this group!

Until now some of us (e.g. Mark McKergow ) tried to establish a closer contact to this community - and it seems, that there is no very remarkable motivation for such a contact to SF within this community....

Maybe you can post a blog in this solworld.ning.com telling more about your… Continue

How to manage OPPORTUNITIES using Risk Management

Working as a project manager (or as a coach for project managers) I always feel very uncomfortable how risk management is done:

Finding out how big the uncertainness of results, quality and costs is, digging for all factors which could harm the project, looking in depth for all sorts of impediments and calculating their probability multiplicated by their impact in € or $ ...

Then defining and planning actions to avoid, reduce or transfer those risks ...

And then, during the… Continue

Edgar Schein: "SF as a simpicistic reduction of complexity"

Just now I received an announcement for a workshop given by Prof. Edgar Schein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Schein) with the title: "Leadership and Transformation - Leadership in tough times", see http://www.trias.ch/d/kurse_coaching_for_transformation_2009.php

There I can read:

"implicit" SF found in a "Software development box"

Just now I found a nice piece here:

http://www.swqual.com/newsletter/vol2/no6/vol2no6.html

It is called: "Project Retrospectives: A kinder, gentler, more productive way to learn from past mistakes"

And it contains this part:

The “Mining for Gold” Exercise:

* What worked well that we don’t want to forget

This list is for those things that most agree worked well… Continue

Who knows better?

For a specific work assignment, I am brushing up on my NLP skills; more specifically, I'm reviewing my teaching materials on conversational hypnosis and persuasion strategies, as per a specific request by the client who hired me.

I am struck yet again by how traditional approaches differ from Solution-Focused ones.

Let's take negotiation skills: a topic that I teach in workshops and in which many clients want to be coached.

The NLP skills used in negotiation… Continue

Some important convergences towards Simplicity and Agility in Management

Some days ago I pointed in the Solutions-List to this video: http://www.infoq.com/presentations/Agile-Transitioning-Mike-Cohn

showing Mike Cohn reflecting upon the transitioning process towards an agile organization and how to deal with the complexity of such processes.

And today I become informed about very recent news about an upcoming "deal" between the "Project Management Institute" (PMI… Continue

Solution-Focused approaches & the Positive Deviance Process

In a recent posting I talked about an intervention for reducing hospital infections.

I noted how that intervention had all the ingredients of a Solution-Focused approach, and that the authors called that approach "Positive Deviance".

Some of my friends, in the comments, mentioned that "Positive Deviance" is a school of thought of its own.

That is… Continue

Change We Can Believe In - a case study of a brief coaching session

I learn a lot from my clients.

After a session, I review my notes; I think of the path taken and of the many paths not taken; I think about what I said, and I think about what the client said; and new insights, new perspectives emerge.

These reflections are very useful to improve my game.

Sometimes, they offer very interesting insights into how the mind works, how change happens, how people think.

A recent coaching session with a new client led me to musings about… Continue
