Permission to share has been granted by author.
I share this blog with you as a thank you to the SF community. It is through this very community that our practice continues to thrive and develop in a way that makes a real difference to our service users and to our staff.
Thank you for joining FBS chats. Thank you for the networking opportunities. Thank you for our conversations.
I hope you enjoy Katherine's blog. Be proud of it as you have all played a small part in her recovery.

I thought I would write this blog on how much the Solution Focused Approach has changed things for me. Although I have a long way to go, I have learnt so much, it has been a journey and a half. I have not loved every step of it, and I have fought some steps. However, I believe in this approach and can see the benefits, as a result it has changed my daily life, in many ways as you will see.

I had never heard of Solution Focused Approach before I met the team at Family Based Solutions (FBS). So, when I was referred to them my initial thoughts were along the lines of ‘great another therapy to fail’ (sorry guys) but it is true. You see at the time I was referred I was in a terrible place, mentally, socially, and physically. I had nothing really to encourage me to keep going so the motivation to actually engage with anyone wasn’t there.

I won’t ever forget the first phone call I received; I was actually at work. That call changed my perspective almost immediately. I say almost because like anyone who has been let down, hurt, and left alone I assumed that the same thing would happen again. The only difference this time though was that call. There was something about the words that were used, I couldn’t put my finger on it at the time, however now I understand it better. The phrases used, the words used were hopeful, they were planning for the future, and despite not knowing me I was spoken to like a human being and not a patient. Only being one phone call, and me not knowing who it was I spoke to on the phone I went back to my office with a little bit of hope that day, that someone might be able and willing to help.

“The image in our minds that we wish to be like, and that we can achieve, one day.”

Those first few meetings I had where a bit of a whirlwind, but the remaining memories of them are how the focus was always on what was going well. For me this was no mans land. This was something no one had asked me before, and I can’t tell you how many times I would annoy people by answering with “I don’t know” which believe me when I say that, if you say it enough you get a response like “Can’t you think of anything, even a small thing that’s gone well?” I still say I don’t know now, but only when I don’t know the answer to something which is massive!

With a Solution Focused Approach I quickly learnt it isn’t needing to look at where you have been on your journey. Like the many types of therapy that I have been to previously where the history of events would be scrutinised and examined in great detail, sometimes meaning I would leave the sessions more traumatised than I started them. It is more about looking at where you want to go, what can you do to get there, and how far you have come. The achievements and how you have overcome the bumps in the road.

The wonderful people at FBS soon discovered I can be quite stubborn though, and still get stuck on the history of stuff, so I make them work. I’m learning this is all part of recovering, and moving forwards, one step at a time. Having the confidence to work towards your preferred future. Most days I can now look back purely to see just how far I have come, it isn’t an easy view admittedly, but it’s a personal journey and the different way of thinking has helped massively.

Learning to look forward and change my own focus and perspective has definitely been an interesting experience. I still have not got used to being asked how I am doing, and what do I want to do. Allowing me to have the choices and to be in control of my own journey. These are all the steps which get broken down into even smaller than baby steps, but I have learnt that that’s okay.

“The craziest thing of all is that this all started from one question that I had never been asked, – what are your best hopes?”

So, on an individual basis this approach has helped me massively, in my confidence, without which this blog page wouldn’t exist. I would never have had to confidence to share parts of my story, to speak to others about their stories. It has even given me the confidence to throw some of the questions back at the FBS guys at times, which is quite humorous I must admit. My view on life in general, on the importance of hope, and keeping that alive in everyone. That hope goes hand in hand with motivation, without the motivation to keep going hope will fade, yet without hope the motivation to keep going will soon diminish.

As a parent this approach has made me so much calmer, in the fight to get my rainbows home it has allowed me to listen better. I hear what they tell me and can respond to it in a much better way. The best conversations happen when you end up with a child who looks at you and says “what, you’re not going to tell me off?” and you can simply say “No, are you going to tell me what you have learnt from this?” To recognise things that as a family we are doing well. Like any family there are some terrible moments, don’t get me wrong. There are teenagers, a pre-teen and a toddler involved which means no day is ever completely smooth sailing. However now it is a case of looking at each day, thinking how we overcame each obstacle, and being proud of what we have achieved.

The work FBS has done has spread across my entire family, not just with me. This has included the amazing online chats that are available to everyone to watch on their Facebook page and YouTube page, I would recommend watching them. They are the best conversation starters if you watch them with others, and good if you need a laugh at times. They have a great sense of humour and outlook on everything. The confidence and ability they have instilled with my children to enable them to use their voice, as well as allowing me to support that as well has made a remarkable difference. All this by only focusing on the future family we want to be. The image in our minds that we wish to be like, and that we can achieve, one day.

I wonder at times why it took so long to find FBS, as I think things would have been much easier if I had met them a long time ago, however I am more than grateful for the impact they have made and continue to make today. The changes are long lasting, and something that will be instilled for years to come. Hopefully something that I will be able to pass on to others as well.

I hope that you can see how much this approach has changed things for me, from hopeless to hopeful, from unmotivated to mostly motivated, and not wanting to give up. The willingness to want to improve, and change for the best, to recognise strengths not just within myself but in all those around me. To recognise that it is ok to reach for your dreams, and in order to do that you will take steps forwards, backwards and hit bumps in the road. The craziest thing of all is that this all started from one question that I had never been asked, what are your best hopes?

Donations to Family Based Solutions can be given through this link, this will enable them to continue to do the work that they do, and help the families that they do. I am only one family of many that receives help, and would love to see this help continue on for others.

Family Based Solutions supports families where there is child to parent abuse and families recovering from domestic abuse. We adopted the solution focused approach in 2014 and quickly saw the difference this approach made to children, young people and families. The approach allows families to identify and expand on their existing knowledge and resources by exploring instances of success and individual strengths
The SF advent calendar - advent, advent, adventuretag:solworld.org,2017-12-01:2102269:BlogPost:796442017-12-01T03:56:29.000ZDominik Godathttp://solworld.org/profile/Dominik

I wanted to signpost to an event my colleague Eric Lynn in Germany is organising. I have been interested in Nora Bateson's (daughter of Gregory Bateson as most will know) work for some time, and her idea of ‘symmathesy’ resonates with me: https://norabateson.wordpress.com/2015/11/03/symmathesy-a-word-in-progress/

Aside: You may find her recent satirical post on “The Ecology of Assholes” an interesting weekend read :)

I cannot attend on 21 April unfortunately but perhaps some of you will find it interesting, especially those in Berlin or within easy reach. Here’s her blurb & you can find more on the Eventbrite link below. If any of you do go, please post your reflections! SF Conference organisers – has she ever been invited to speak or give a workshop?

“The Paradox of Leadership” with Nora Bateson

What is leadership in this moment? When we look through the lens of interdependency, it is impossible to separate individuals from their contexts of influence and experience. This blurs the ‘hero’s story.’

Dramatic societal transformation is taking place around the globe, and the urge to help steer this transformation toward a healthier future is strong. How do current ideas of leadership both confirm and conflict with our desire to create positive change? Systemic leadership is a process of intellectual stretching, emotional complexity, and linguistic renovation.

Leadership is an evolving process and, as such, our understanding of what leadership is must evolve in accordance. In the past the world understood leadership as the great deeds of heroes, but now we are in another phase of global transition that requires an understanding of leadership based on our understanding of interdependency. This is where the paradox comes in.

Each person filters their experience through the particular frame of their own lives. There are no two of us that perceive identical worlds. And yet…Is there a part of any of us that we can point to and truly say, “that is me, untouched or influenced by any of my history, my culture, education, family, religion, social life...”? Unlikely. Our task is not to solve this paradox, but to discover the productive openings within it.

In our session on leadership we will have presentations, story, discussion, exercises and the Symmathesy Lab to become familiar with the paradox.

Two new terms we will be exploring are:

Symmathesy: An entity forming within contexts of mutual learning (a characteristic of any complex system).

Transcontextual description: The process of description to illustrate the many contexts that co-exist (in any complex system).
How we use SF in our companytag:solworld.org,2016-12-06:2102269:BlogPost:748222016-12-06T15:04:09.000ZJim Nanirekohttp://solworld.org/profile/JimNanireko

I work for a company where we are trying to implement SF methods. Here is our story.

We are a small company with around fifty office workers. Several months ago our computer systems were breached by an advanced ransom Trojan like Osiris. It encrypted our client’s database and many other important documents. That was a big blow for us. We had to pause most of our business processes to deal with that ransomware attack. We started to disinfect our computers and restore data from backups. IT guys did their best, but due to some technical glitches, our backups got spoiled. We were not able to restore our files. That could ruin our business. Top managers decided to pay the ransom. Eventually, hackers sent the decryption key, and we could decrypt 95% of files.

This was an eye opening experience. That case showed how quickly our business could be destroyed. Although we had up-to-date antivirus software and other infosec precautions, the virus still managed to penetrate our systems.

Some of our managers visited SF seminars and suggested to apply new methods to prevent future cyber-attacks.

So, we started to ask ourselves questions like - what do we want. We found that we want to be safe from all computer viruses and ransomware in particular. Our computer networks should be better protected by technical means, and our employees should become an additional cyber-defense line.

Evaluating our position on the success scale, we found some positive indicators. Our computers and systems were protected relatively well. All software programs were regularly updated. Antivirus flagged rare viruses. Workers did not spend time surfing the dark sides of the Internet, even social networks were forbidden.

To choose an optimal solution, we knew that we should consider and evaluate all possible measures and ways. We saw that to achieve our goals we should start moving in two main directions.

First – to enhance the security of our computers by adopting more complex and sophisticated virus detection mechanisms. Second – run a security training program for our users. We decided to break both approaches into smaller parts.

One of the best and widely used methods to strengthen your cyber security is to buy, set up and tune complex endpoint security solutions that should include intrusion prevention modules and many other additional systems. This is a great approach, but it is not cheap, it requires time and human resources to set up and tune it.

We wanted to find something that we already have, something that can be done quickly by taking small steps. We set this task to our IT team. Studying the matter, they begin to come up with simple solutions. It is not necessary to enumerate them all here, but you should know that Microsoft systems offer plenty of ways that allow you enhance your virus protection. You can:

Turn off Macros and ActiveX

Disable Volume Shadow Copy Service

Disable Windows Script Host

Disable Windows PowerShell

Define Software Restriction Policies

Again, It is just a small example of what can be done to Windows systems that you already have. You should start to evaluate which of these controls you do not need in your daily business routine work, turn them off one by one and gradually increase your protection. It is simple, it is cheap, and it proved to be working. Many virus authors rely on default Windows settings, so tweaking some of them may substantially increase your security posture.

Another vector of our efforts had to do with our users, workers who click on links and surf the web. We wanted them to be prepared for virus attacks and know what to do in case online breaches happen. We probed theoretical courses of security awareness. We could not measure the success of those training sessions. We wanted something more practical, hands-on type.

And we came up with one simple and great technique. We wanted our users to quickly identify and stay away from viruses. We decided to deliberately put them into the risky environment. We informed our users that we are going to send fake phishing emails and instant messages to all workers and they should identify and report those malicious messages. Every week three workers would receive monetary prizes for being the most effective in identifying viruses.

It turned into a game which quickly paid off. During the first week, several threats reported by our employees were real-world viruses and not the fake ones sent by our IT staff. We constantly measured this phishing click-through rate. It was 35% in the beginning. Now it is 75% and growing.

For now, we are making our first tiny steps implementing solution focused approaches in our company. We want to rebuild all our business processes to better serve our clients. We started applying SF in cyber security. We identified several ways to achieve our goal, broke them in small but effective steps which started to move things forward. Now we see that it is working and bringing positive changes. We want to move on and extrapolate SF to other spheres of our business.
Post-Brexit free open space event by Katherine Long: Monday, July 4, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM (BST)tag:solworld.org,2016-06-25:2102269:BlogPost:739662016-06-25T15:40:34.000ZZarine Jacobhttp://solworld.org/profile/ZarineJacob

I mean, really got the chance to tell the right people your idea?

I have. And it didn’t turn out quite how I expected.

Let me set the scene for you: Years ago I was working passionately on a project supporting female coffee farmers in Rwanda. I was part of a leadership training at the time, and I was dying to tell everyone about my project, and see what support I could gain.

Suddenly, and without warning, an opportunity appeared.

The facilitator said: “I invite 3 people to come and pitch what they are working on, now, on stage.” My hand shot up, before I had a chance to stop it.

So I did the best I could. I filled up my short time with hand movements, walking around the stage, messages filled with emotion and names dropped here, there and everywhere.

Claps, head nods my way. My pitch had gone great.

Or so I thought.

Next up to speak was an actor. “Raise your hand if you have ever had a teacher that made you feel so small, that to this day you are not confident in the subject they taught you?’

Every single person in the room raised their hand.

He carried on, speaking about his project and how it related directly to that pain point that everyone was now vividly remembering. I was enjoying his speech, thinking my job was done and getting ready to go back to my networking.

That’s not what the facilitator had in mind.

Once everyone was done, he asked the audience to stand in front of the person who had resonated with them the most.

50 people in the room…. 2 of them stood in front of me.

The ‘teacher’ guy got a line so long that it literally went round corners.

I was devastated.

What did this mean? That my project had no value? Why didn’t they line up for my dream?

You want to know why?

Because the other guy LISTENED. He found a pain point that everyone in that room would relate to, and he zoned in on that before he even started relaying his message. He spoke to individuals, not to ‘potential supporters’, like I did.

That’s why people heard him. Because he heard them, first.

Painful lesson.

But it has served me, again and again. And I want it to serve you too. Next time you have a speech, or ANY message that you want to get across:

Slow down.

Stop thinking about what you need for a few minutes, and think about how this message can help the people you’re talking to.

How does it relate to them, what’s happening in their world right now that you can tap into? I guess what I’m trying to say is:

Listen first, if you want to get heard.

With 50 participants and 2 days program on "Difference that makes a difference" it was a joint event of EBTA and SOLWorld, put together by Jesper H Christiansen (www.solutionsurfers.dk) and Anne-Marie Wulf (www.solutionsbywulf.dk) .

Nora Bateson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nora_Bateson) opened the conference with an inspiring presentation on the main conference theme. This quote is associated with Gregory Bateson but Nora stressed that William Bateson (father of Gregory and founder of what we call now genetics https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Bateson) expressed the idea before him. William also had the idea "treasure your exceptions". Nora works on initiating research which keeps the "things" being investigated in their context. This makes great sense of connectedness and wholeness, and taking parts out of their interdependence seems to be less useful. To grasp this interconnection, multiple descriptions of anything we want describe are needed. She argued persuasively against flow charts and structure boxes and suggested metaphors which leave space for unexpected and mutual influencing of the "parts", "zooming in and out". Her work was inspirational for SF practitioners who are engaged in seeing families and clients as whole organisms - and in my subjective view closer to our work than I could get it, back at the SOLWorld conference in Hungary, 2011.

In the following workshop slot, Karin Pharès showed her work, Jesper H. Christiansen introduced a case "solution focused future forum" (See description in InterAction: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/sfct/inter/2014/00000006/00000001/art00007?crawler=true) in an interactive way.
My own workshop (Kati Hankovszky Christiansen) was also a space for learning within the solution focused paradigm (see in Interaction http://www.ingentaconnect.com/search/article?option2=author&value2=hankovszky+hirschburger&sortDescending=true&sortField=default&pageSize=10&index=1 ). In the highly individualised process led by questions/suggestions for interactions, connections were explored between learning and solution focus(ed conversations): also the topic of my current PhD research. We used examples of recent professional learning experiences to find that interaction enables learning, that organised learning events are not necessarily the most common environment for learning and that declaring a situation as "learning " makes an experience adaptive (similar to my finding in a microstudy, 2015, unpublished). These findings resonate with current efforts to recognise adults learning under informal conditions as often happens in communities of practice - such as SOLWorld :)

The second round of workshops allowed a live conversation to be studied, Henrik Christensen gave a workshop on SF in Schools. Harry Korman offered a workshop on "exceptions" and spoke with engagement against a "thinning out" of the solution focused model and for paying attention to exceptions (which show a family resemblance to "what's better" questions) and for giving tasks. As well as Harry’s extensive knowledge of all Steve de Shazer’s texts, his case examples were inspiring. The first client he quoted (a case from 2004) seemed not to be able to find any times when her very disturbing problem was not happening. Harry´s staying persistent got its prize: suddenly a 30-minutes period during the previous week when she could control her problem
could be identified. Harry used a recent case to show how he managed by really closely detailed work to co-create 3 exceptions from the time since the previous session - and showed how classic tasks can serve client's focusing his attention on his preferred future actions. Impressive: Harry's not-questioning the frame of the client .(ok,ok we know it's normal for SF practice but he's REALLY accepting all conditions which were there when they stopped the conversation).
Kitchen table was in Danish, sorry, no details ;)

The start of the second day allowed participants to wrap up 1st day's experiences.
In a keynote speech, Peter Szabó introduced his latest thoughts on changing change the first time (as Harry Korman commented: changing our talking about change) - and offered three stories with his comments. Change is already happening, so you can relax and see what might come out of it... (A transcript of his talk will be available soon on his new homepage.)
His presentation was followed by an reportedly excellent workshop of Anette Kureer on SF leadership (leading is not a science, it's a meeting of people), Anne-Marie Wulf on SF mentoring (a Danish local format of helping (young) individuals),
Sofie Geisler and Jonas Wells put together an interactive workshop on large scale SF work (such as governmental negotiations, coordination of different governmental and non-governmental Services). Their examples from Sweden and Mexico illustrated the incredible adaptability of solution focused conversations. In my view they managed to create a remarkable and encouraging/contagious description of their large scale work, DESCRIBING the relevant interactions without wanting to create a model or a recipe, which is a very solution focused way to allow new actions for us fellow practitioners.
An impressively active first open space at a Danish conference followed.
Another excellent choice of the organisers: the last plenary offered the stage to Solveig Larsen to share her just-completed Master thesis on "Hope in solution focused practice" - refreshing excellent inspiration with touching AND funny stories.

Dear SOLworld community, you are lucky, some of these guys will show up in Liverpool!!! Join the conference or the online study buddy possibility :D

thx for reading sooooo far. deep bow
Kati Hankovszky
www.solutionsurfers.hu<http://www.solutionsurfers.hu>
www.handlungsspielraeume.com
Design Meetings that Inspire Action!
Practify. What is it?

Practify is an online space where you share reflections on learnings in various situations. For those at the conference it will focus on learnings from attending the conference and the open spaces.

The system has a playful approach (gamification) where you score when you complete tasks eg writing a reflection, commenting on someone else's contribution, uploading a picture or something else.

Everybody who participates can see what everybody does - it’s 100% access.

THE IDEA

Study-Buddies. How does it work?

Non-participant “outsiders” can partner up with conference participants - “insiders” in pairs.
Through their Study-Buddy partnership, they will exchange reflections and insights from what happens at the conference.

Costs: an “outsider” pays €40 to participate.

Study-Buddies. The different roles.

“Insiders” have 3 ways to participate in Practify:

As a Study-Buddy volunteer. Then you go into a pool of “insiders” for the “outsiders” to choose from and partner up with. First come first served.

As a Study-Buddy for someone they have chosen themselves beforehand i.e. “I want to partner up with my colleague at work because I want her to get to know more about what I do” or “I just know someone who is not coming and I feel more comfortable to partner up with this person.” – In other words you can partner up in the way you wish.
Send Jesper an e-mail if you have special wishes: mail@jesperchristiansen.com.

As a Study-Buddy for another “Insider” who they find either before the conference (participants list here - http://tinyurl.com/sol2016 - scroll down!)

eventbrite.co.uk/e/practify-solworld-conference-liverpool-tickets-24739424284

Cost: all 3 roles are free of charge. However you must commit to completing the tasks and playing along and thereby create content for the Practify space.

Registration: during the conference, people can of course decide to 'jump on the train' and participate.

Timeline. When and what.

A week prior to the conference, Study-Buddy pairs will be in touch about best hopes for the conference and their co-working relationship. “Free agents” will do the same for themselves also on Practify.

During the conference there will be given small tasks focused on reflections, insights etc. The tasks will be designed in a way that fits the conference programme and social gatherings. “Keep it simple”.

In the three weeks after the conference there will be further - still simple - tasks/challenges connected to the learnings from the conference.

After one month the project closes.

Either during or after the conference, an editorial team will look at the content and see what can come out of it for publishing: blog-posts, articles, cases and maybe even an e-book.

Who will facilitate it?

Jesper H Christiansen will facilitate the process from signing up to deliver the tasks/challenges and make sure that people stay in touch/use Practify after the conference.

Jesper gets help from Arpi - Árpád Bárnai - from Practify/Analogy and Kati Hankovszky two people with great experience in involving and nurturing people and their insights.

What happens with the content?

The content is meant to serve the SOLWorld community. This idea was born in the mind of Jesper and is fuelled by a wish for making insights and learnings from the community accessible for non-SF-people as well as inspire SF-people.

The idea is supported by Jenny Clarke and Mark McKergow which makes the Liverpool conference a unique possibility to try out something new.

As it is emergent, just like the conference itself, there’s no guarantee that what comes out of it is applicable to publishing. But we definitely believe so!

Questions?

Please mail Jesper at: mail@jesperchristiansen.com.
Early bird deadline for SOLWorld 2016 conference is the end of March!tag:solworld.org,2016-03-25:2102269:BlogPost:725502016-03-25T10:57:54.000ZMark McKergowhttp://solworld.org/profile/MarkMcKergow

What can we say about politics from a solution-focused viewpoint? I know several SF practitioners have been considering that question for a while, and it was on Fania Pallikarakis's mind when she interviewed me recently for her article in the Huffington Post.

Here's the interview.

FP Do you believe that SF ideas could apply in a political setting?

PZJ Solutions Focus is the direct route to positive change. The approach is founded on getting the best out of people, using their resources and taking small steps to see what happens, at low risk. Therefore, it is possible to apply this set of ideas not only on the level of individuals, teams, groups or companies but also on the level of communities and world politics. The principles don’t change.

FP What would you say would be the outcomes of such an implementation?

PZJ You have to tell me! Because you just did that in Greece! In England, where I live, the Labour Party is very cautious; tries not to commit to anything and seeks to disguise the fact that it is left-wing, so that it gets closer to the middle. In contrast to that, the Syriza leaders are making some bold statements and are rejecting a culture of corruption that is linked to not paying taxes. And they also have a fresh approach on how to lead negotiations. It seems to me that Syriza inspired many people to reconnect with politics in a different way and it raised the party from 3% to a 36% share of the vote. Maybe Podemos in Spain will do something similar.

FP Does that mean that you recognise some SF elements in Syriza’s approach?

PZJ Having conversations is very solution-focused; listening to people, taking their views into account for the policy formation based on what their needs and resources are. And there one can find some strong parallels into how a party could work in a solution-focused way and make that a very successful intervention. The politicians from the Syriza party went to remote communities and asked farmers and market people what they wanted. “These were the only people who really came and talked to us and asked us what we wanted” – that’s what these people told interviewers from UK newspapers.

FP In your opinion, how did that make a difference?

PZJ Implicitly, there seem to be some SF elements and an inspired vision of the future, what we call a Future Perfect. It’s about asking people what they want, through policy formation; it is about going beyond presenting the party’s programme, into engagement. It is a process that is bottom-up as well, instead of being only top-down. And that connection creates trust. People got inspired because they are always interested in things being better. And that is exciting. It looks different.”

FP What if a party was explicitly applying an SF approach for policy formation? How would you notice without being told?

PZJ I would be hearing that there are a lot of meetings in town halls and village communes where people gather to describe what they want and how they would want the future to be like. And from there we’d hear about new policy initiatives. Small steps would be taken very quickly in order to see what worked. There would also be a lot of sharing of good ideas that worked well and people would explore how these ideas could also be implemented in other cases. The documentation of these stories would make them circulate so that things happen. And you would see the momentum and see that people are very engaged with this.

FP Isn’t the future shaped upon the options one has?

PZJ Yes. And this is why in the SF process we also work on creating more options. And this is possible. For example, in Syriza, they seem to be rejecting a finance concept that until now seemed to be a one-way path. They look for possibilities into what else they can do. For example, the fact that they want to speak separately to the three finance institutions so as to have specific, particular conversations with each party, opens up a new perspective. Since they don’t know what will happen, they focus on what’s important first. I like the creativity of the thinking; it seems to have some SF flavour in the sense that it’s about taking small steps and see what happens.

FP So how do you imagine SF strategies could be applied for decision-making related to public good?

PZJ You might gather a group of leaders together and create a Future Perfect; main advisors, stakeholders, state and finance people, including those who maybe don’t agree with a specific party’s ideas but who are genuinely interested in things to work out well for the country. And we would intensively work through what it is that they want and what are the available resources that will take them towards there. Then, we would design and agree steps that they can take and also define small signs that would tell us that we were on the right track during, before and after decided actions. This would be instead of wasting time over-analysing problems and how they occurred in the past. We would look at what we can affect now, which is to create a better future than the current one. Good things would come out of that, no matter what would happen.

FP Do you think there is hope for more solution-oriented politics?

PZJ Yes. I believe we shall see more of this in the future. Today, people in all countries are detached from politics and yet we have the mechanisms to be more connected to it; we have the internet that makes it easier to engage people in conversations and gather them around an interest or focus. These sort of initiatives will happen and if they are done in a solution-focused way, we know it’s effective.

The interview was published in Greek at the Huffington Post Greece on 12/02/2015: http://www.huffingtonpost.gr/fania-palikaraki/-solution-focus-_b_6668576.html

I’ve just spent three days on a tennis court, learning the intricacies of the Inner Game – and beyond – with a group of sports coaches led by former US tennis pro Sean Brawley. I went with two aims.

One was to improve my tennis and the other was to clarify the resonances between Inner Game (IG) and Solutions Focus (SF). Here’s how the best bits of Inner Game make sense to me, in an amalgam with SF.

Gerrard, who went through disappointing World Cup campaigns in 2006 and 2010 - when England lost 4-1 to Germany - said he underlined the high price of failure in a special address to the squad.

"Going into this game, (they have) to realise it could be a terrible long, frustrating summer if we don't get it right on Thursday," he said. "There is no hiding place for a player when you go out of a tournament. You go home earlier than you expect. It can be tough as a player and it can take an awful long time to get over it."

It was supposed to be stirring stuff, but it’s difficult to inspire people with stressful problem talk. A solutions-focused coach or captain would have put the emphasis on getting to the next round, with words and images of “winning… goals… glory… success…. Teamwork.” Words can make a significant difference. (As, of course, can a genius player like Louis Suarez).

Kapitel 1: Gruppen-Lehrsupervision

Kapitel 2: Konzept

Kapitel 3. Methoden

Kapitel 4: Praxisbeispiele

Kapitel 5: Grundbegriffe
