A presto. Ho delle belle novità che per ottobre dovrebbero avere una migliore configurazione.

Hi Paolo, thanks for inviting me as your facebook friend. I read you're now in America? Do you live there? I am curious what you do, do you do research?

Ciao Paolo,

thanks for your offer to "share forces" re SF and the US-army! Sure we can. What's your article meant to be about? What could I contribute to it?
I started only recently doing trainings for the local branches of US-army here close to their European Headquarters (Heidelberg). They're not meant to have any SF focus - but I love to "smuggle" some SF into them anyway ...

Cheers,

Klaus

Absolutely. I have a slightly old article which is the first I wrote on proscopic memory, with an (perhaps a bit far-fetched) hypotheses that SF is 50000 years old. Can I mail it to you?

Ciao,
There are lots of interesting connections. I first got into how the future is processed in the brain, as an aid to anticipatory planning. Tulving has suggested the concept of proscopic memory, a future form of episodic memory. This is an area with not much research, but the idea fits so well with SF. Episodic memory's function is perhaps mainly to support future thinking, and future thinking is what lets us handle needs we do not have at the moment but will in the future, such as buying food when we are not hungry. The brain seems to have an algorithm for solving things like that, and SF fits right into that algorithm. I could go so far as saying that SF uses that algorithm. In this sense SF is inbuilt in the brain since at least 50000 years. Connect this with stress and emotion. Emotions can be seen as tuning the brain and behavior for particular tasks. Negative emotions turn on fight/fight/freeze and positive emotions turn on sociality, exploration, learning, seeing different angles and so on. Big problems invite negative emotions and stress, and thus we approach them with a short term emergency brain, not very efficient. Small problems we handle SF-like from the beginning. Perhaps SF help the brain to function like a big problem was a small one; relaxed, creative, and awake. This is very briefly what I'm thinking about.

Ciao,
It is really refreshing to find someone with a similar view. Me and Caroline (my life and job-partner) were starting to feel a bit lonely. Tell me about your books and article. (By the way, 1981-82 I lived in Vercelli for a year studying guitar. I didn't learn much italian, though. I only practiced all day long)

Ciao Paolo
I loved what you wrote in comment to Mark's article. We seem to have similar thinking. I will go out and buy some parmigano (which my 4-year old loves and calles "kids cheese") to celebrate the precence of two italians in our community.

Hi Paolo,

We missed you in Cologne. There was another interesting Italian man, Marco. And you two are already in touch. Great.
