The SOL2012 Experience Begins - With A Very Small Miracle

As I look from my bedroom high over the magnificent quadrangle of Keble College, the signs are promising for a good day at the SOL2012 conference.

Yesterday afternoon, 30 people gathered at Science Oxford for our pre-conference and enthusiastically learned our 12 Things You Need To Know about Solutions Focus.  They asked some great questions, which we can track through the conference, such as how much can one embrace SF in our personal lives, and does the methodology allow for…

Fifty Shades of Therapy - a literary treat

As I was reading volume 2 of the latest literary erotic sensation, Fifty Shades of Grey, I found a particularly arousing passage 79% of the way through.  “SFBT - The latest therapy option,” one character recommends to our heroine.

The therapist himself, Dr John Flynn, is good enough to describe Solution Focused Brief Therapy:  “Essentially, it’s goal-oriented.  We concentrate on where Christian wants to be and how to get him there… There’s no point breast-beating about the…

Uncovering Treasure: Influencing with Solution Focus - Report on SFCT UK Chapter call

Uncovering Treasure: Influencing with Solution Focus

Recently we had an SFCT UK call discussion on an article by Loraine Kennedy and Colin Coombs entitled “Uncovering Treasure: Influencing with Solution Focus.” This was printed in InterAction Volume 3 Number 2. We suggest you read this if you have not already done so.

Loraine pointed out that the article was a workshop paper and that it captured the learning from 3 workshops of 2 hours duration on the topic of Influencing…

SF and Kaizen: Not all small steps are equal?

Last year I was lucky enough to be lead facilitator at the TED Fellows Collaboratorium event in New Orleans (link).  The event was to bring together the brilliant young TED Fellows group with coaches and mentors, working on real issues in quite large groups – something of a facilitational challenge. As part of my role I wrote a facilitators’…

SF Association in Hungary: start-up workshop

Just a piece of local information to share: on March 2nd the first members of the newly founded SF Association spent a Saturday designing a future vision and first steps on the Hungarian scene, a very exciting colorful mixture of professionals including even a composer. We would like to thank the community for coming to Hungary this spring to the Balatonfured conference, help and inspire a Hungarian community form and start working. The future plan, among others, includes SF cooperation…

What difference did publishing 'The Solutions Focus' book make?

It’s ten years now since the publication of The Solutions Focus.  We wanted the book to spread the ideas, and ten years later it’s succeeded to some extent – there’s a flourishing world-wide community of practitioners, a great annual conference, and thousands of people who have used SF in their lives and work.  The OSKAR coaching model pops up in many organisations, and it’s fun to recognise elements of SF in some unlikely places.

I heard yesterday, for example, that at Wembley Arena,…

Sharing documents with the others

From time to time, members of the of the The SOLUTIONS-L email listserv may wish to share a document with other members .

There are several ways to achieve this. The key issue is whether the contributor wants to share the document with the world, or they want to restrict access to members of the listserv.

When a member adds a document to their own SOLWorld blog, it…

Multiculturalism and Solution Focused Psychotherapy: an exploration of the none-expert role

The role of the Solution Focused psychotherapist is less about confirming the rights of the client as an individual and more about amplifying their preferred social performance. The client, the therapist and the drama of therapy represent the object of this performance in which cultural meaning is simply amplified. The identity of the client is framed within multicultural narratives and discourse with which the psychotherapist grapples and strives to maintain a type of neutrality and…

Identity

Identity is culturally constructed. We acquire our own identity through shared understanding of cultural practices i.e. the positioning of own gender, race, class and status etc, it is a positioning and classification of ‘self’ within these repertoires of cultural practices that we gain our identity… http://www.changebrieftherapy.org/images/identity12.pdf

Local Radio interview

I gave a short interview the local Community radio  and outlined the Solution Focused  Approach to coaching yesterday.
I  was reflecting on the interview yesterday, trying to put things together.
Then all of a sudden a thought came to me from a quick chat I had with the station manager.
The station itself is a community radio station and is solely funded by donations. It is manned purely by volunteers. They have struggled to  make ends meet, particularly…

Ten years of The Solutions Focus book

It’s ten years to the day since the first edition of The Solutions Focus book was published.  I’ll always remember 8 February 2002 – because it was the first day of the SOL 2002 conference, the first of the astounding series of SOLWorld events over the past decade.  So, it’s a good moment to look back on what’s happened over the intervening period and also indulge in a…
