Uniting Thought and Action

Thought and action cannot be separated from one another, i.e. a person’s movements reflect their thinking and visa versa. A real change in thinking will be reflected in movement. If a new idea or solution (thinking) is to take hold, then there must be corollary change in action (movement). This holds true for the client as well as the coach. In this workshop, you will experience how your own actions can influence your thinking, enabling you to work more effectively as a coach by better observing the signals coming from your client. Additionally, you will become more aware of your own actions and how to sense them while still focusing on your client.

Sf and the Feldenkrais Method are both solution-based approaches to changing thinking and action. By experiencing these two methods, we will be able to explore the connection between thought and action. Practical exercises in coaching and movement awareness will blend together to create a new understanding of how action and thought influence and support each other.

This workshop was taught by Stephanie von Bidder and me. Since we will be doing more of this work, we're looking forward to exchanging ideas.

Thank you for that Lina! Dr. Moshè Feldenrkrais suggested that the brain was plastic long before it was proven. Here's a quote from his book, "Awareness Through Movement" that sheds a little light on his thinking and the relationship between movement and thinking (Thought and Action).

"A fundamental change in the motor basis within any single integration pattern will break up the cohesion of the whole and thereby leave thought and feeling without anchorage in the patterns of their established routines, In this condition it is much easier to effect changes in thinking and feeling, for the muscular part through which thinking and feeling reach our awareness has changed and no longer expresses the patterns previously familiar to us. Habit has lost its chief support, that of the muscles, and has become more amenable to change.“
I've recorded and uploaded a lesson similar to what we did in the workshop on Texel. It should be available as an mp3 file that you can play on your computer or ipod type player. Instead of writing more, I thought a lesson like this would be more useful. Feel free to share the lesson with anyone interested. Just a reminder, do all of the movements gently and softly. If you have any pain or discomfort, stop for a moment and then start again doing less movement and possibly more slowly. Sensations of strain or discomfort only interfere with the learning going on from moving. If you have any questions or comments, I'd love to hear for you. Enjoy, John
