In the London SF Group's first meeting of 2012, Ali Abington facilitated an interactive discussion on the topic, “What is different about solution-focused evaluation?” The session included a two-part exercise in which Ali invited members to think back to an evaluation they had done in the past year and reflect on which aspects of their approach they found to have worked particularly well. She then asked them to consider what different or new elements they might introduce to a ‘best possible’ SF evaluation of a project or case they would deliver in 2012.

Unsurprisingly, this thought-provoking ‘What is different?’ question from Paul Z Jackson generated a wide-ranging list of best hopes for the session, together with rich discussion and resource suggestions. Among the wealth of ideas: using an SF approach to evaluate the Group itself; SF evaluation in a commercial context; SF elements to introduce into leadership forums; evaluation using Duncan and Millers’ ORS (Outcome Rating Scale) and SRS (Session Rating Scale) and using expectations as part of the evaluation process. Thanks to everyone who attended, not only for their valued input but also for their high levels of energy and enthusiasm on the second working day of 2012!
Group Meeting Feb 2012tag:solworld.org,2012-02-08:2102269:Topic:520902012-02-08T11:26:37.396ZZarine Jacobhttp://solworld.org/profile/ZarineJacob

As is our custom, we started the meeting by introducing ourselves with a few words about what we had been pleased to notice recently or what was going well for us. The conversation then turned to the topic of the conduct of the monthly meetings: what would we like to see? Working in 3 groups, we generated a long list – and we’d welcome more ideas from any SF practitioner with easy access to central London, whether you have ever attended a meeting or not. This is what we came up with:

We like the intimacy and security of the group and the mutual trust it engenders

We value the exchange of ideas about what works (and what doesn’t) and the connections made in this multidisciplinary group

The emergent nature of the meetings with no pre-announced agenda or topic for discussion has great strength AND there could be value in introducing more structure occasionally.

Several possible topics were suggested including IGNITE sessions (http://igniteshow.com) where everyone who wants to has 5 minutes to show 20 slides on a topic of their choice; Skill swap sessions; technique/exercise practice sessions; connections between SF and the world eg Switch (Chip & Dan Heath), Gregory Bateson; radical psychiatry/psychology ...; case studies; how to promote SF in the wider world where there are so many issues it could address; invited speakers.

We discussed the location – the wine bars we use give us the room for nothing which means that we don’t have to charge for the meetings. Does the location put some people off? – Please let us know.

We discussed the format:

having 3 or 4 stages to each meeting works well – the gathering , chatting and drinks buying; the hellos from everyone present; a topic on which to focus; and a closing piece. We could think about varying the opening question

adding some structure to the programme through the year for example by having pre-announced topics every 2 or 3 months with a lead speaker/facilitator and everyone encouraged to think about it beforehand

another possible rhythm would be a 4 month cycle: a topic; cases or skill swaps; no agenda – allow emergence; invites guests as speakers.

We briefly discussed “positive promotion” – how to bring the world’s attention to SF. It is already used in a wide variety of settings but how do we inspire people who don’t know about it? Using blogs and twitter were seen as valuable resource. #solutionfocus has already been set up in twitter-land – we don’t know by whom.
2010 meetings - dates, times, locations...tag:solworld.org,2010-03-19:2102269:Topic:209422010-03-19T08:33:17.715ZZarine Jacobhttp://solworld.org/profile/ZarineJacob

Each event is hosted by Host of the Month.

We'll have taking of turns to host, decided either month by month, or a bit further in advance. Host ensures the meeting runs to time, according to the plan, or facilitates a change in plan if that seems more appropriate.
Ensures everyone gets a fair turn in, for example, the Hello section.

1 As people arrive, about 30 minutes free-for-all conversation, drink-buying, gossip, whatever.

2 Saying Hello; a hosted 20' round of a solutions-focused saying hello
-
eg, Something going well this week - for each person to introduce themselves.

3 Topic of the session. This may be a topic that emerges from the Hello section, that the host discovers is what people want to discuss. It may be a Reflecting Team on someone's issue. It may be a presentation by a guest or a regular member. The topic may be announced in advance - eg if it's a guest who will lead something - or may emerge on the night. But there will be something, and it will be facilitated either by the host or by someone else present.

4 London Chapter agenda items - eg eg dates, hosts, speakers, news, etc).

5 Remaining time - free-for-all meeting on 7th Jantag:solworld.org,2009-01-02:2102269:Topic:105812009-01-02T18:37:16.299ZZarine Jacobhttp://solworld.org/profile/ZarineJacob
Here's hoping some of you can make it to raise a glass to the new year next Wednesday.
I know that David said he would be away, so how many will be attending?
I can make it and would like to encourage others on the UKASFP list but I can't seem to send messages to the new list. So if someone could do that .....?
